Meromorphic functions and projective curves

From MaRDI portal

This book describes the theory of meromorphic functions and linear series on a compact Riemann surface. In the introduction, the author writes: ``The book is targeted at the non-expert who wishes to learn enough about meromorphic functions and holomorphic curves so that he/she will be able to apply the results in his/her own research. For example, a differential geometer working in minimal surface theory may want to find out more about the distribution pattern of poles and zeroes of a meromorphic function. The first chapter gives a review of sheaf theory, Čech cohomology, divisors, Riemann-Roch, and the Jacobian variety. The second chapter describes families of complex spaces (mostly emphasizing Chow varieties). Chapter 3 is described as ``the most important chapter of the book. Let \(C\) be a compact Riemann surface, and let \(R_d(C)\) denote the set of non-zero rational functions on \(C\) of degree \(d\). This chapter gives the description of the map \(R_d(C)/\text{Aut}(\mathbb P^1) \to J(C)\) (defined by mapping a rational function \(f\) to \(J(C)\) via its divisor of zeroes) as a map whose fiber is an open dense subset of a Grassmann manifold. This chapter follows \textit{M. Namba}, ``Families of meromorphic functions on compact Riemann surfaces, Lect. Notes Math. 767 (1979; Zbl 0417.32008). Chapter 4 gives an exposition of Brill-Noether theory, following \textit{E. Arbarello, M. Cornalba, P. A. Griffiths} and \textit{J. Harris}, ``Geometry of algebraic curves, Vol. I (1985; Zbl 0559.14017). Chapter 5 describes Frenet frames and dual and tangential varieties. Finally, the last chapter gives an account of holomorphic curves from a metric point of view of holomorphic curves. The book gives a number of extensive explicit examples.
