Minimal stretch maps between euclidean triangles

From MaRDI portal

In 1985, Thurston introduced an (asymmetric) metric which is called Thurston metric now. In this paper, the authors mainly study a metric on the moduli space of Euclidean triangles which is an analogue of Thurston's (asymmetric) metric on the Teichmüller space of a surface of finite type.\N\NGiven an ordered pair of Euclidean triangles \(T_{1}\) and \(T_{2}\) with marked vertices whose angles are all acute, let \(f:T_{1}\rightarrow T_{2}\) be a label-preserving homeomorphism. The Lipschitz constant of \(f\) is defined as \N\[\NL(f)=\sup_{x,y\in T_{1},~x\neq y} \displaystyle\frac{d_{euc}(f(x), f(y))}{d_{euc}(x,y)},\N\] \Nwhere \(d_{euc}\) is the metric in the Euclidean plane. The authors find a homeomorphism with the smallest Lipschitz constant among all homeomorphisms from \(T_{1}\) to \(T_{2}\) that preserve the marking. Furthermore, they give a formula for the Lipschitz constant of this map. They show that on the set of pairs of marked acute triangles with fixed area, the function which assigns the logarithm of the infimum of the Lipschitz constants of Lipschitz homeomorphisms between them induces a symmetric metric. They show that this metric is Finsler and give a necessary and sufficient condition for a path in the resulting metric space to be geodesic. They also determine the isometry group of this metric space.
