Modules covered by finite unions of submodules

From MaRDI portal

In this work, the author generalizes a result on finite unions of ideals and a result on finite unions of subspaces to finite unions of submodules over a commutative ring. The author shows that if a module is the union of \(n\) submodules, \(M=M_1 \cup M_2 \cup \cdots \cup M_n\), but not the union of any \(n-1\) of them, then each of the submodules contains the intersection of the others. Thus, \(\bigcap_{i\not= j} M_i = \bigcap_{i=1}^n M_i\). This generalizes a result of \textit{N. H. McCoy} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 8, 633-637 (1957; Zbl 0078.02201)] in which McCoy used ideals rather than submodules. The author gives several consequences to this generalization of McCoy's result, one of which shows that when the \(M_i\)'s are primary submodules, then each radical of the submodule \(M_i\) of \(M\) in \(R\) is the same maximal ideal in \(R\). The following is an elementary lemma on vector spaces: If \(V=V_1 \cup V_2 \cup \cdots \cup V_n\) is a \(k\)-vector space written as the union of proper subspaces, then \(n>\text{card }k\). The author generalizes this result to modules over an arbitrary commutative ring \(R\) and investigates the cardinalities of the residue class fields \(R/ I\).
