Monogenic even quartic trinomials
An irreducible monic polynomial \(f(x) \in {\mathbb Z}[x]\) is called monogenic if \(\left\{ 1, \theta, \ldots, \theta^{\deg(f)-1} \right\}\) is a basis for the ring of integers of \({\mathbb Q}(\theta)\) where \(f(\theta)=0\). In such cases, the field \({\mathbb Q}(\theta)\) is also called monogenic.\N\NThere is a well-known example due to Dedekind showing that not all fields are monogenic: the cubic field \({\mathbb Q}(\theta)\) where \(\theta\) is a root of the polynomial \(x^{3}-x^{2}-2x-8\). So there are no monogenic polynomials \(f(x) \in {\mathbb Z}[x]\) with a root that generates the field in Dedekind's example.\N\NOne can ask further questions such as when polynomials satisfying certain natural properties are monogenic. An example of this is to consider monogenic polynomials according to their Galois groups. The author has done much previous work on this for polynomials of small degree. Here he continues this work considering even quartic polynomials with \(C_{4}\) as their Galois group. His Theorem~1.1 states that there are three such distinct polynomials, \(x^{4}-4x^{2}+2\), \(x^{4}+4x^{2}+2\) and \(x^{4}-5x^{2}+5\). Here distinct means that the polynomials generate distinct fields.\N\NIn Section~4 of this paper, he shows that the situation is different for even quartic polynomials with other Galois groups. There are two other possible Galois groups for even quartic polynomials: the Klein \(4\)-group, \(V\), and the dihedral group of order \(8\), \(D_{4}\). For both groups, he constructs infinitely many such monogenic polynomials.
