Multimedia course data base systems. Incl. 1 CD-ROM

From MaRDI portal

The rapidly growing knowledge of database systems is here for the first time presented on CD-ROM as interactive learning software. The material is divided into three parts: relational database systems, deductive database systems and object oriented database systems. Special attention was paid to theoretical foundations as well as to practical applications. The presented topics comprise e.g. relational algebra, query optimization, decomposition of relations into normalized ones, predicate logic, DATALOG, deductive query optimization, NF2-algebra, ODMG-93, OQL, SQL3. But e.g. 4NF and 3-phase commit are not covered. Of course the CD-ROM is no addendum but the better part of the book, which contains exercises -- preceded by more detailed material and with solutions -- and glossaries not found in the written part. It is organized as HTML-document suitable for use with any HTML-browser. Users connected to the internet have free online access to an example database with the possibility of SQL-queries. There is nothing with sound, but 10 animations illustrate complex processes. The division into three parts is rather strict on the CD-ROM, each having its own glossary, short bibliography and separate block of exercises. The lot of hyperlinks turn the CD-ROM into a very useful reference book while preparing for an examination, while I would prefer the written part when first acquiring the material.
