Multiple Integrals of Symmetric Functions

From MaRDI portal

The author points out how to express the integral over a cube \(C\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) of a function which is symmetric in the \(n\) coordinates as \(n!\) times its integral over \(C\cap \{x_1\leq x_2\leq\cdots\leq x_n\}\). He then offers six nontrivial applications to problems from \textit{G. Pólya} and \textit{G. Szegö} [``Problems and theorems in analysis. Vol. I: Series, integral calculus, theory of functions (1976; Zbl 0338.00001)], the \textit{American Mathematical Monthly}, and the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competitions. An example is \[ \int_D\log|\sin(x- y)| dx dy= -{1\over 2} \pi^2\log 2, \] where \(D:= \{(x, y): 0\leq x\leq y\leq \pi\}\).
