Multiresolutional analysis with sampling subspaces

From MaRDI portal

This survey paper focuses on the relationship between sampling theorems, an important tool in signal analysis, and multiresolution analysis (MRA). The study of sampling and interpolation in a given MRA has been the subject of many recent research papers. This paper approaches the subject from an opposite point of view, basing the MRA on the sampling theorems. It starts with a sampling function satisfying very general hypotheses and uses it to construct an MRA and a ``sampling mother wavelet. The novelty of the authors' approach is not only in its unconventional treatment but it has also the advantage to lead to simpler algorithms which reduce some calculations. For example, in the MRA based on sampling theorems, the initial calculation of the coefficients at the finest scale is based on function evaluation. In the usual approach it is based on inner products which, in practice, are approximated using function evaluation. But in this new approach this evaluation is exact. The decomposition and reconstruction algorithms are also simplified in this approach. The authors survey and extend some of their earlier results [\textit{A. Zayed}, Advances in Shannon's sampling theory, CRC Press, Boca Raton (1993; Zbl 0868.94011) and \textit{G. Walter}, Wavelets and other orthogonal systems with applications, CRC Press, Boca Raton (1994; Zbl 0866.42022)].
