Multivariate Ostrowski type inequalities

From MaRDI portal

The distance between the value \(f(x_{1},\cdots,x_{k})\) of a function \(f \in C^{1}(\prod^{k}_{i=1}[a_{i},b_{i}])\) and its integral mean can be estimated by the formula \[ \begin{gathered} \left| \frac{1}{\Pi^{k}_{i=1}(b_{i}-a_{i})} \int^{b_{1}}_{a_{1}}\int^{b_{2}}_{a_{2}} \cdots \int^{b_{k}}_{a_{k}} f(z_{1},\dots,z_{k})dz_{1}\ldots dz_{k} - f(x_{1},\dots,x_{k})\right| \\ \leq \sum^{k}_{i=1} \frac{(x_{i}-a_{i})^{2}+(b_{i}-x_{i})^{2}}{2(b_{i}-a_{i})} \left \| \frac{\partial f}{\partial z_{i}}\right\|_{\infty}. \end{gathered} \] This estimate is sharp and equality is obtained for \[ f(z_{i},\dots,z_{k}):= \sum^{k}_{i=1}| z_{i}-x_{i}| ^{\alpha_{i}} \quad (\alpha_{i} > 1) . \] This result is proved and extended to compact and convex subsets of \({\mathbb R}^{k}\).
