Noise stability on hyperbolic groups
For a probability measure \(\mu\) on a countable group \(\Gamma\), let \((w_n)\) be the associated random walk. For \(\rho\in[0,1]\), form \(w_n^\rho\) by independently resampling each increment with probability \(\rho\), and denote by \(\pi_n^\rho\) the joint distribution of \((w_n,w_n^\rho)\). The paper investigates whether this distribution remains distinguishable from the product distribution \(\mu^{*n}\otimes\mu^{*n}\) as \(n\) tends to infinity.\N\NThe main result proves noise stability in total variation for a non-elementary word hyperbolic group \(\Gamma\) admitting a nonzero homomorphism to \(\mathbb{R}\). More precisely, if \(\mu\) is symmetric, has finite exponential moment, and its support is not contained in a proper subgroup of \(\Gamma\), then \(\|\pi_n^\rho-\mu^{*n}\otimes\mu^{*n}\|_{\mathrm{TV}}\to1\) as \(n\to\infty\), for every \(\rho\in[0,1)\).\N\NA stronger statement is obtained when \(\mu\) is non-elementary and has finite exponential moment, and \(\varphi_*\mu\) is centered for some homomorphism \(\varphi\colon\Gamma\to\mathbb{R}\) which is not identically zero on the support of \(\mu\). If \(\lambda_\mu\) is the escape rate, then, for distinct \(\rho,\rho'\in[0,1]\) and every \(\alpha\in(0,\lambda_\mu)\), the distributions \(\pi_n^\rho\) and \(\pi_n^{\rho'}\) become asymptotically separated even in the relaxed total-variation distance allowing perturbations of size at most \(\alpha n\). The corresponding harmonic measures on \(\partial\Gamma\times\partial\Gamma\) are pairwise mutually singular.
