Nonlinear conservation laws and finite volume methods

From MaRDI portal

These notes present some numerical algorithms for the solution of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws that are used in gas dynamics simulations and, in particular, in astrophysical calculations. First, the author discusses in detail the properties of underlying Euler equations, along with their generalizations to magnetohydrodynamics and relativistic flows, and source terms which model combustion, radiation and gravity. The mathematical theory of hyperbolic systems presented in this paper includes linear and nonlinear cases, weak solutions, shock waves, Lax entropy condition, and various approaches to the Riemann problem. As for numerical methods, the author starts from one-dimensional simulations. For this case he examines thoroughly finite difference and finite volume techniques, discusses Godunov method, high-resolution schemes, Riemann solvers, and various modifications of the fractional step method. Then a discussion is given on the multidimensional case, where the author studies in detail the applications of finite volume method, adaptive grid refinement, and analyzes some computational difficulties. Two final sections present selected applications to magnetohydrodynamics and relativistic hydrodynamics. An extensive literature list (266 references) leads the interested reader to specific topics.
