Nonlocal variational principles

From MaRDI portal

The paper deals with a minimization problem for a nonlocal functional \[ I(u)= \int_\Omega \int_\Omega F(x,\xi,u(x), u(\xi),\nabla u(x),\nabla u(\xi))dx d\xi \] over \(u: \Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N\to \mathbb{R}^m\) belonging to the Sobolev space \(W^{1,p}(\Omega; \mathbb{R}^m)\), which is to model a nonlinear long-range interaction, as appears, e.g., in ferromagnetism. The goal is to understand how the nonlocal character affects weak lower-semicontinuity of \(I\) and its relaxation. Young measures generated by sequences of the form \(\{(\nabla u_j(x),\nabla u_j(\xi))\}\) with \(\{u_j\}\) bounded in \(W^{1,p}(\Omega; \mathbb{R}^m)\) are the basic tool for these investigations. The results generalize some classical results for standard (i.e., local) vectorial variational problems.
