Normal forms of matrices with applications to almost completely decomposable groups
\textit{M. Dugas} and \textit{E. Oxford} [in Abelian Groups, Proc. Curaçao Conf. 1991, Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 146, 129-150 (1993; Zbl 0806.20042)] classified a special class of almost completely decomposable groups, called uniform groups, up to near-isomorphism by certain invariants. In the present paper the same is achieved by describing the groups, as Dugas and Oxford did, by so-called representing matrices, interpreting near-isomorphism by an equivalence of representing matrices, and establishing normal forms in the equivalence classes. It is a fairly technical process involving many definitions that cannot all be reproduced here. A uniform group \(X\) is an extension of a completely decomposable group \(R=\tau_1x_1\oplus\cdots\oplus\tau_rx_r\) such that \(X/R\) is a finite direct sum of cyclic \(p\)-groups all of the same order \(p^e\), where the \(\tau_j\) are subgroups of the additive group of rational numbers containing \(\mathbb{Z}\) with pairwise incomparable types, and \(X(\tau_j)=\tau_jx_j\). Thus \(X=R+\sum_{i=1}^kp^{-e}a_i\) with \(\text{order}(p^{-e}(a_i+R))=p^e\). It may be assumed that the \(x_j\) are so chosen that the \(x_i+p^eR\) form a basis of the free \(\mathbb{Z}/p^e\mathbb{Z}\)-module \(R/p^eR\). Writing \(a_i+p^eR=\sum_j\alpha_{ij}(x_j+p^eR)\) one obtains the representing matrix \([\alpha_{ij}]\). The representing matrices contain essential information about uniform groups and isomorphism and near-isomorphism of two groups with common ``regulator \(R\) and representing matrices \(A\) and \(B\) translate into a relation \(B=UAV\) for special matrices \(U,V\). This is the fact that turns the study of uniform groups into a study of matrix equivalence. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0921.00018].
