This article is part of the book [Convex geometry. Cetraro, Italy, August 30 -- September 3, 2021. Lecture notes given at the summer school. Cham: Springer; Florence: Fondazione CIME (2023; Zbl 1530.52001)], edited by \textit{A. Colesanti} (ed.) and \textit{M. Ludwig} (ed.).\N\NConcretely, this is an introductory chapter where the author collects the preliminary definitions, properties and results which are needed for the subsequent chapters of the volume: convex bodies, supporting hyperplanes and metric projection, Minkowski addition, Hausdorff distance, the support and the gauge functions, the polar body, the Steiner formula and the intrinsic volumes, the most general mixed volumes, and the surface area measures and the Minkowski problem.\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1530.52001].
