Note on models
From MaRDI portal
In this short note, the author mainly focuses on how concrete mathematical models became abstract models, that is the shift in the usage of the word ``model in mathematics. There is a loose connection between late 19th-century polytechnical tradition in the German-speaking countries (mainly Germany and Switzerland here) and the evolution of the usage of the word ``model, which is skimmed over in this note.
