Note on monotonicity of generalized weighted mean values
The authors offer a proof of increasing monotonicity in \(r\) and \(s\) of the means defined by \[ M_{p,f}(r,s;x,y)=\begin{cases}\left(\frac{\int\limits_x^y p(u)f^s(u)du}{\int\limits_x^y p(u)f^r(u)du}\right)^{\frac{1}{s-r}} &\text{if }(r-s)(x-y)\neq 0,\\ \exp\left(\frac{\int\limits_x^y p(u)f^r(u)\ln f(u)du}{\int\limits_x^y p(u)f^r(u)du}\right) &\text{if }x-y\neq 0,s=r,\\ f(x)&\text{if }x-y=0.\end{cases} \] The result is a particular case of Theorem 7 in \textit{L. Losonczi's} paper in J. Math. Anal. Appl. 61, 586-606 (1977; Zbl 0378.26008). The correspondance of the notations in the present and in Losonczi's paper is \[ M_{p,f}(r,s;x,y)=\mathcal I_{s-r}(f)_r. \] In the more general case of a measure space \((X,\mathcal S,\mu),\) given by \(X=[x,y], \mathcal S\) the \(\sigma\)-algebra of all Lebesgue measurable subsets of \(X\), \(\mu([u,v])=\int\limits_u^v p(t)dt\) for all subintervals \([u,v]\) of \([x,y],\) in Losonczi's paper the comparison problem \[ \mathcal I_{a}(f)_p\leq\mathcal I_{b}(f)_q\quad(a,p,b,q\in \mathbb{R}) \] is solved completely.
