Note on the variance of generalized random polygons

From MaRDI portal

The authors study planar random convex sets of the following type. Let \(K,L\) be compact convex sets of class \(C_2^+\) in the plane and suppose that \(K\) is the intersection of the translates of \(L\) containing \(K\). For independent uniform random points \(x_1,\dots,x_n\) in \(K\), let \(K_n^L\) be the intersection of the translates of \(L\) containing these points. The interest is in the vertex number and the missed area of the random convex sets \(K_n^L\), as \(n\) tends to infinity. Expectations of these random variables were investigated by \textit{F. Fodor} et al. [Mathematika 66, No. 2, 498--513 (2020; Zbl 1440.52009)]. The present paper deals with the variances. Asymptotic upper bounds are obtained under the assumption that the maximal curvature of \(\partial L\) is less than \(1\) and the minimal curvature of \(\partial K\) is larger than \(1\), and under the alternate assumption that \(K=L\). A strong law of large numbers for the missed area can be derived. Further results concern the random convex set \([x_1,\dots,x_n]^*= \bigcap_{i=1}^n(L-x_i)\), the Minkowski difference of \(L\) and the convex hull of \(x_1,\dots,x_n\).
