Numerical Solution of a Functional Equation on a Circle

From MaRDI portal

The problem of determining curves invariant under the Poincaré map for a dynamical system leads to a linear functional equation \((*)\;R(x)=H(x)R(a(x))+Q(x)\) where \(x\) is in \(S^ 1\), \(a: S^ 1\to S^ 1\) and \(H,Q:S^ 1\to\mathbb{R}\) are given. The authors give sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of continuous or smoother solutions of \((*)\). Then a second- and third-order scheme are described for \((*)\) and error estimates are given. The authors also present numerical solutions of \((*)\) in some particular cases. The paper concludes with remarks concerning a nonlinear analogon of \((*)\). [Reviewer's remark: Apparently the authors are not aware of the book ``Iterative functional equations by \textit{M. Kuczma}, \textit{B. Choczewski} and \textit{R. Ger} (Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Its Applications 32; Cambridge Univ. Press 1990; Zbl 0703.39005), where, in particular, an exhaustive account on the theory of functional equations more general than \((*)\) is contained].
