Numerical methods for wave equations in geophysical fluid dynamics

From MaRDI portal

The book deals with numerical methods for solution of partial differential equations governing wave-like flows. The first chapter discusses the relations between the equations governing wave-like geophysical flows and other types of partial differential equations. Chapter 1 presents also a short overview of the strategies for numerical approximations that are considered throughout the book. Chapter 2 describes the classical theory of finite difference method for the one-way wave equation, whereas the extensions of the theory to systems of equations, several space dimensions, dissipative flows and nonlinear problems are discussed in chapter 3. Chapter 4 introduces series expansion methods with emphasis on Fourier and spherical-harmonic spectral methods and the finite element method. Chapter 5 deals with the finite volume methods, and semi-Lagrangian schemes are analyzed in chapter 6. In chapter 7, the author examines schemes for the approximations of slow moving waves in fluids that support physically insignificant fast waves. The emphasis in chapter 7 is on atmospheric applications. Chapter 8 presents the formulation of wave-permeable boundary conditions for limited-area models with applications to shallow water equations and to internally stratified flows. Although the book is designed to serve as a textbook for graduate students, it is also useful for researchers which are interested in numerical methods for problems like tracer transport, shallow-water flows, and the evolution of internal waves in a continuously stratified fluid. In order to establish a clear link between theory and practice, the author follows successfully a middle course between the theorem-and-proof formalism and the reliance on numerical experimentation.
