Object oriented software development with Smalltalk
This book is mainly about Smalltalk and it treats software engineering and the object-oriented paradigma as seen from Smalltalk. The concepts and mechanisms of Smalltalk are presented and it is shown how they can be used to implement the structures found during object-oriented analysis and design. The possibility of supporting an iterative development during all phases of the lifecycle is emphasized. The primary aim is not to give a complete survey of all aspects of the language, and only little is said about user interfaces, error management and distributed systems. The structure of object-oriented models is however much more detailed than elsewhere. Despite not being explicitly mentioned as such several design patterns are introduced. The connection to database applications is twofold: it is shown in chapter 5 how relational algebra can be encapsulated into a class relation, and chapter 13 treats persistence of objects in several ways including the use of Object Store\(^{\circledR}\), an object-oriented database system. The concepts and architecture of the Smalltalk system are exposed in chapter 1 before the details of the syntax are treated and used in simple examples in chapters 2 and 3. Some important classes in the class hierarchy and expansions thereof are explained in chapters 4 and 5, object structures in chapters 6 and 7. In chapters 8 to 12 several case studies taken from banking business and being based one upon another point out iterative software development. Two chapters on persistence and extended mechanisms of object communication close the book. It is complete with several exercises, method-, class- and program list, index and bibliography.
