Wenn \(a\) und \(b\) nahezu gleiche Zahlen sind, so ist angenähert \[ \root n\of{\frac ab} =\frac {(n+1)a+(n-1)b}{(n-1)a+(n+1)b}, \] \[ (1+x)^{\frac 1n}=\frac {2n+(n+1)x}{2n+(n-1)x}, \] wo das Fehlerglied der zweiten Formel mit \(x^3(n^2-1)/12n^3\) beginnt. Die Note ist inhaltlich übereinstimmend mit einer vom Verf. in Edinb. M. S. Proc. 10, 21-23 veröffentlichten Notiz (F. d. M. 24, 228, 1892, JFM 24.0228.02). Das Zitat am Schlusse ist unrichtig. Die anzuführende Stelle bei \textit{Gauß} ist: Werke 3, 209.
