On a nonlinear fluid-structure interaction problem defined on a domain depending on time

From MaRDI portal

The paper deals with the interaction between a 2D fluid and a structure which occupies a portion of the boundary of the fluid domain. The fluid moves on a square plate, one side of which is the moving structure. The velocity field and the density of the fluid are governed by the compressible Stokes equations and by the mass conservation equation. The authors look for the velocity field in the form of a potential. The coupling between the fluid and the structure is given by imposing the equality between the normal velocity of the fluid and the variation of the displacement of the structure on the moving portion of the boundary. The existence of such a solution is proved by solving independently the equations for the fluid and for the structure, and then the coupling is obtained with a fix point argument. In particular the mass conservation equation is solved with the characteristics method, while the Stokes equation is solved by means of an elliptic regularization, in order to obtain enough regularity on the boundary in such a way that the traces of the solutions are meaningful.
