On bounds of certain classes of special functions
Some inequalities concerning the Whittaker functions \(W_{k,m}(z)\) and ratios of them are found. The tools used are a standard integral representation for \(W_{k,m}(z)\) together with certain recurrence relation [see \textit{E. T. Whittaker} and \textit{G. N. Watson}, A course of modern Analysis, Cambridge, Cambridge Univ. Press, Reproduction of the 4th ed. 1927, pp. 340 and 352 (1996; Zbl 0951.30002)]. By specializing the parameters, several inequalities for other functions are given in the form of a table. Inequalities of the ratio of modified Bessel functions of second kind \(K_\nu(x)\) and of ratios \(J_\nu(x)/ Y_\nu(x)\) are also derived. The preceding inequalities provide for some functions sharper bounds than other ones given by several authors in earlier papers. Furthermore and on the other hand, the authors point out corrections of some results which appear in the paper by \textit{C. M. Joshi} and \textit{S. K. Bissu} [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A, 50, No. 2, 333-342 (1991; Zbl 0732.33002)].
