On free subsemigroups
From MaRDI portal
Let S be a cancellative semigroup and for a,b\(\in S\) let \(<a,b>\) be the subsemigroup of S generated by a,b. Then \(<a,b>\) is free or \(a<a,b>\cap b<a,b>\neq \emptyset.\) Several interesting consequences of this result are addressed in the paper.
