On horospherical rigidity
Let \((M^n, g)\) be an \(n\)-dimensional closed negatively curved Riemannian manifold with \(n\geq 3\). Let \(\mu_L\) denote the Liouville measure on the unit tangent bundle \(T^1M\). For \(v\in T^1(M)\), we denote by \(s(v)\) its scalar curvature. The authors prove the following result: Assume that either (i) \(\int_{T_1 M} s(v) d\mu_L\geq 0\) or (ii) there exists a vector \(v_0\) in \(T^1_{m_0}M\) and a horosphere, \(H(v_0)\), such that \(s(w)\geq 0\) for all \(w\in T_m^1M\) with \(m\in H(v_0)\) and \(w\) is such that \(H(w)=H(v_0)\). Then, \((M,g)\) has contant negative curvature.\N\NAs a corollary, the authors prove that on any closed negatively curved manifold \(M^n\) of dimension \(n\geq 3\), a horosphere endowed with the induced Riemannian metric cannot have non-negative scalar curvature unless \(M^n\) is real hyperbolic, in which case all horospheres are flat.
