On multiplicative functions satisfying a special relation

From MaRDI portal

The authors study pairs of completely multiplicative functions \(f\), \(g:{\mathbb N}\to\{0,1\}\) satisfying the identity \(f(n)=g(an+b)\) for all \(n\in\mathbb N\) and some fixed coprime \(a\), \(b\in\mathbb N\). They give a complete answer under the assumption that \(g(p)\) vanishes for all prime divisors \(p\) of \(b\), namely \(f(n)=1\) if and only if \((n,b)=1\), while \(g(n)=1\) if \((n,ab)=1\), and \(g(n)=0\) if \((n,b)>1\). The authors also give several related results: the aim is to find a complete characterization of pairs of multiplicative functions for which \(g(n+k)-f(n)\to 0\) as \(n\to\infty\). For \(f=g\) and \(k=1\), Wirsing proved that either \(f(n)=n^s\) for some fixed \(s\in\mathbb C\) with \(\text{Re}(s)<1\) or \(f(n)\to 0\) as \(n\to\infty\).
