On optimal Lebesgue function type sum
Let \(n\in\mathbb{N}:=\{1,2,\dots\}\) and \[ X^c_n=\{\chi=(x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n):1=x_1>x_2>\dots> x_{n-1}>x_n=-1\}. \] Denote the fundamental polynomials of Lagrange interpolation on \(\chi\in X_n\) by \[ \ell_k(x):=\ell_k(\chi,x)=\frac{\omega_n(x)}{(x-x_k)\omega'_n(x_k)}, \quad k=1,2,\dots n, \] where \(\omega_n(x):=\omega_n(\chi,x)=\prod^n_{k=1}(x-x_k)\). The Lebesgue function type sum with a fixed positive number \(s\) is defined by \[ \Lambda_n(\chi):=\Lambda_n(\chi,x):=\Lambda_n(s,\chi,x)=\sum^n_{k=1} |(x-x_k)\ell_k(x)|^s, \quad \chi\in X_n. \] The author considers \(\lambda_n(s):=\inf_{\chi\in X^c_n} |\Lambda_n(\chi)|= \min_{\chi\in X^c_n}|\Lambda_n(\chi)|\), where \(|\cdot |\) stands for the uniform norm. The author shows that the optimal Lebesgue function type sum \(\Lambda_n(\chi^*)\) must equioscillate and the optimal set of nodes \(\chi^*\) is unique. Theorem 1. \(\chi^*\in X_n^c\) is an optimal set of nodes if and only if \(\Lambda_n(\chi^*)\) equioscillates, i.e.; \[ h_1(\chi^*)=h_2(\chi^*)=\dots=h_{n-1}(\chi^*), \text{ where } h_i(\chi)=\max_{x_{i+1}\leq x\leq x_i} \Lambda_n(\chi). \] Theorem 2. The optimal set of nodes is uniquely given by \(\chi^*\), the set of zeros of \(\omega_n(\chi^*,x)=\frac{2^{1-n}T_n(t_n x)}{t^n_n}\), where \(T_n(x)\) stands for the \(n\)-th Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind and \(t_n=\cos \frac \pi {2n}\). Moreover, \[ \lambda_n(s)=|\Lambda_n(\chi^*)|=\frac 1{n^s t^s_n} \sum^n_{k=1} \sin^s\frac{(2k-1)\pi}{2n}. \]
