On permutations of class sums of alternating groups
The author discusses certain permutations \(\sigma\) of the conjugacy classes of the alternating group \(A_n\) on \(n\) letters. The center of the integral group ring \(\mathbb{Z} A_n\) has as basis the sums of elements of conjugacy classes, the so-called class sums. If \(\sigma\) satisfies certain hypotheses, then the author proves that unless \(n=6\), any class sum \(C_g\) is mapped to either the same class sum or to \(C^-_g\) such that \(C_g+C^-_g\) is a class sum of the integral group ring of the symmetric group \(S_n\) on \(n\) letters. In case \(n=6\) the permutation \(\sigma\) can be modified by a group automorphism \(\rho\) of \(A_n\) such that \(\sigma\rho\) has this property. In [DMV Semin. 18, 1-152 (1992; Zbl 0769.20004)], \textit{K. W. Roggenkamp} gives an incomplete sketch of proof of a related statement due to W. Kimmerle. In [Bayreuther Math. Schr. 36 (1991; Zbl 0728.20005)], \textit{W. Kimmerle} proves that if \(\sigma\) is an augmentation preserving automorphism of \(\mathbb{Z} A_n\), then in a certain faithful block \(B\) of \(\mathbb{Q} G\) the group bases \(A_n\) and \(\sigma(A_n)\) are conjugate. The three proofs are all different. However, the proof in the paper under review is the shortest.
