On profinite groups with the Magnus property

From MaRDI portal

A group \(G\) has the Magnus property (\textsf{MP}) if the normal closures of two elements coincide only when the elements are conjugate or inverse-conjugate. The stronger version (\textsf{SMP}) requires them to be conjugate. While the \textsf{MP} has classical roots in one-relator and free groups, recent interest has shifted to broader classes of groups, including profinite completions and direct products of free groups.\N\NThe paper under review initiates a systematic study of profinite groups with the Magnus property, extending known results for finite \textsf{MP} groups. The authors prove that a profinite group with the \textsf{MP} is necessarily prosolvable (Theorem 1.1) and that quotients and inverse limits of profinite \textsf{MP} groups retain the \textsf{MP} (Theorems 1.2 and 1.5). Among the consequences is that any finitely generated profinite \textsf{MP} group is finite (Theorem 1.6) and its order is divisible only by primes in \(\{2,3,5,7\}\) (Corollary 1.3). Furthermore, the second derived subgroup of any such group is pronilpotent (Corollary 1.4).\N\NCorollary 1.3 builds on results by \textit{M. Garonzi} and the first author [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 56, No. 10, 3114--3128 (2024; Zbl 1557.20008)], but interested readers may also consult [\textit{R. Gow}, J. Algebra 40, 280--299 (1976; Zbl 0348.20017); \textit{D. Chillag} and \textit{S.
