On quadratic forms.
Sind die Coefficienten einer positiven quadratischen Form beliebige reelle Grössen, die Variablen aber ganze Zahlen, so kann man den Variabeln solche Werthe ertheilen, dass der Werth der Form ein Minimum ist. Das Minimum ändert sich, wenn die Coefficienten sich ändern und kann unter jeden angebbaren Werth herabsinken, aber, wenn die Determinante \(-D\), und die Anzahl der Variabeln \(n\) gegeben ist, eine gewisse Grenze nicht übersteigen. Um dies Maximum für die Minima aller positiven Formen von \(n\) Variabeln und der Determinante \(-D\) zu finden, verwandeln die Verfasser die eine gegebene Form in eine äquivalente von der Gestalt: \[ A(x_1+\alpha x_2+\beta x_3+\cdots +\gamma x_n)^2+A'(x_2+\delta x_3+\cdots +\zeta x_n)^2+\cdots + A^{(n-2)}(x_{n-1}+\sigma x_n)^2+A_{n-1}x^2_n, \] wo \(A\) das Minimum der Form \(f\), \(A'\) das Minimum der Form \[ A'(x_2+\delta x_3+\cdots +\zeta x_n)^2+\cdots +A^{(n-2)}(x_{n- 1}+\sigma x_n)^2+A_{n+1}x^2_n, \] u. s. w., schliesslich \(A^{(n-2)}\) das Minimum der binären Form \[ A^{(n-2)}(x_{n-1}+\sigma x_n)^2+A^{(n-1)} x^2_n \] ist, und \(\alpha,\beta,\cdots \sigma\) dem absoluthen Werthe nach kleiner als \(\frac{1}{2}\) sind. Diese Darstellung der Form nennen sie ihre Entwicklung nach den Minimis. Ist \[ f=k(x+\lambda y)^2+ly^2 \] die Entwicklung einer binären Form nach den Minimis, so ist \(l\geqq \frac{3}{4}k\). Daraus ergiebt sich für die Minima \(A\) der Formen von \(n\) Variabeln und der Determinante \(-D\) die (Hermite'sche) Grenze \[ A\leqq \left(\frac{4}{3}\right)^{\frac{n-1}{2}}\,\root n \of D. \] Ist ferner \[ f=A(x+\lambda y+\mu z)^2+Ak(y+\sigma z)^2+Alz^2 \] die Entwicklung einer ternären Form nach den Minimis, so ist \(k\geqq \frac{3}{4}\) und \(l\geqq \frac{2}{3}\), und es giebt wirklich zwei Klassen, für welche \(l=\frac{2}{3}\) ist. Daraus ergiebt sich für die Minima \(A\) der Formen von \(n\) Variabeln die Grenze \[ A\leqq \frac{3^{\frac{m-2}{2}}}{2^{\frac{m-1}{2}}}\;\root n \of D\, \] wenn \(n=2m\) und \[ A\leqq \root n\of {\frac{3^{m(m-1)}}{2^{m(m-2)}}\,D}\,, \] wenn \(n=2m+1\) ist. Diese Grenze wird aber nur bei den ternären und quaternären Formen erreicht, ist dagegen bei Formen von mehr als 4 Variabeln zu gross. Ist bei einer quaternären Form \[ f=A(x+\alpha y +\beta z +\gamma t)^2 + Ak(y+\delta z+\varepsilon t)^2 + Al(z+\zeta t)^2 + Amt^2 \] die Entwicklung nach den Minimis, so ist \(k\geqq \frac{3}{4}\), \(l\geqq \frac{2}{3}\), \(m\geqq \frac{1}{2}\) und die Grenze \(m=\frac{1}{2}\) wird von einer bestimmten Klasse wirklich erreicht.
