On self-adjointness of symmetric diffusion operators

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: Let Omega be a domain in Rid with boundary Gamma and let dGamma denote the Euclidean distance to Gamma. Further let H=divv(Cabla) where C=(,ckl,)>0 with ckl=clk are real, bounded, Lipschitz continuous functions and D(H)=Ccinfty(Omega). Assume also that there is a deltageq0 such that |C/dGamma,deltaaI|o0 as dGammao0 with deltageq0 where a is a bounded Lipschitz continuous function with ageqmu>0 on a boundary layer Gamma!!r=xinOmega:dGamma(x)<r. Finally we require |(divvC).(abladGamma)|dGamma,delta+1 to be bounded on~Gamma!!r. Then we prove that if Omega is a C2-domain, or if where S is a countable set of positively separated points, or if with Pi a convex set whose boundary has Hausdorff dimension dHin1,ldots,d1 then the condition delta>2(ddH)/2 is sufficient for H to be essentially self-adjoint as an operator on L2(Omega). In particular delta>3/2 suffices for C2-domains. Finally we prove that deltageq3/2 is necessary in the C2-case.
