On subspaces of indecomposable Banach spaces
The paper under review is devoted to give new information about which Banach spaces can be isomorphically embedded into indecomposable Banach spaces. It has already been known that every separable reflexive Banach space is a subspace of an indecomposable separable Banach space and that there is an indecomposable Banach space containing \(\ell_1\). The authors prove that a Banach space of density not bigger than the continuum which does not admit a quotient isomorphic to \(\ell_\infty\) can be embedded into an indecomposable Banach space of density not bigger than the continuum of the form \(C(K)\). They also show that not admitting a quotient isomorphic to \(\ell_\infty\) is not a necessary condition as they present an indecomposable \(C(K)\) space which admits a quotient isomorphic to \(\ell_\infty\).\N\NThe spaces \(C(K)\) constructed have few* operators (that is, for every bounded linear operator \(T\) on \(C(K)\) its adjoint \(T^*\) is of the form \(T^*=g\, \mathrm{Id} +S\) where \(g\) is a Borel function and \(S\) is a weakly compact operator on \(C(K)^*\)) and satisfy that \(K\setminus F\) is connected for every finite subset \(F\subset K\). The inductive construction of these \(C(K)\) spaces requires a heavy modification of a method due to \textit{R.~Haydon} [Isr. J. Math. 40, 65--73 (1981; Zbl 1358.46007)]. The interested reader should definitely go through the nicely written introduction of the paper under review to get the full flavour of the ideas developed in this work.
