On the Computation of Certain Homotopical Functors

From MaRDI portal

The development of a non-abelian tensor product of groups by \textit{R. Brown} and \textit{J.-L. Loday} [Topology 26, 311-335 (1987; Zbl 0622.55009)] provided a very useful tool for the calculation of homotopy theoretic functors defined on (finitely presented) groups \(G\). For instance \(\pi_3SK(G,1)\) is isomorphic to the kernel \(J(G)\) of the commutator map from \(G\otimes G\) to \(G\); the second homology group \(H_2(G)\) of \(G\) with integer coefficients is a quotient of \(J(G)\) by the subgroup generated by the elements \(x\otimes x\) for \(x\in G\), and relative versions also exist. In this paper the theoretical background of these ideas is sketched and applied to the development of MAGMA programs to calculate such invariants for f.p. groups. The MAGMA program itself, a test input file and a text version of the description of the version procedures is included with the electronic version of the paper. The speed of the program on various test cases is given.
