On the Mehler-Fock wavelet transform

From MaRDI portal

The authors continue their ongoing study of the Mehler-Fock (MF) wavelet transform by introducing a convolution product tailored to this setting. This fits into a well-established pattern in the literature -- following Pathak's general wavelet convolution theory -- where such constructions have already been carried out for a range of index transforms with special-function kernels (Kontorovich-Lebedev, index Whittaker, Bessel, \(q\)-Dunkl, among others), several by these same authors.\N\NAfter recalling the standard MF-transform, its inversion and Parseval formulas, and the translation/convolution operators built from the symmetric kernel \(K(x,y,z)\), the paper moves to the continuous MF-wavelet transform \(\mathcal{M}_\psi f(b,a)\). The authors first establish a factorization identity showing that the MF-wavelet transform of the new convolution splits as a product of two wavelet transforms, and then use this to derive the paper's central result: an explicit formula for \(f\otimes_M g\) in terms of a generalized translation operator, whose kernel is expressed through a fairly intricate nested integral of Legendre functions. From there, a handful of expected estimates are proved -- an \(L^2\) Young-type inequality, associativity of the convolution relative to a fixed wavelet, and a couple of weighted and \(L^\infty\) bounds.\N\NThe mathematics is carried out by direct, classical means: repeated application of inversion and Parseval identities, Hölder's inequality, and standard order-of-integration arguments. There is no new structural idea here beyond adapting an already well-worn template to a new kernel; the computations, while correct as far as one can check, mirror closely what the same group and others have done for related transforms. The result is a solid but incremental contribution -- useful as another entry in the wavelet-convolution catalogue, and presumably a stepping stone toward applications (localization operators, uncertainty principles) that the authors have pursued for other transforms but do not take up here.
