Der Beweis für die Identitäten \[ \varSigma \frac{q^m}{1-q^m} = \varSigma \frac{q^n}{1-q^{2n}} = \varSigma \frac{q^{\frac 12 (n^2+n)}}{1-q^n} \] wird auf zahlentheoretischem Wege gegeben; die drei Ausdrücke sind auch \(=\varSigma F(N)q^N\), wo \(F(N)\) die Anzahl der ungeraden Teiler von \(N\) bezeichnet. Die Summe \[ F(1) + F(2) + \dots + F(N) \] nähert sich asymptotisch dem Werthe: \[ \frac 12 N\log N+(C-\frac 14)N, \] wo \(C\) die Euler'sche Constante. Analog erweist sich \[ 4\varSigma(-1)^{\frac 12 (n-1)} \frac{\sqrt{q^m}}{1-q^m} = 4 \varSigma (-1)^{m-1} \sqrt{q^{m^2}} \left( \frac{1+q^{2m}}{1-q^{2m}} \right) \] \[ (m=1,3,5,\dots), \] als identisch mit \[ \frac{2kK}{\pi} = \varSigma f(M) \sqrt{q^M} \qquad (M=1,3,5,\dots), \] wo \[ f(M) = 4\varSigma (-1)^{\frac 12 (d-1)}, \] wenn die Summe auf alle Teiler von \(M\) bezogen wird. Der asymptotische Wert von \[ f(1) + f(5) + f(9) + \cdots + f(M) \] ergiebt sich gleich \(\frac{\pi}{2} \cdot M\). Auf ähnliche Weise werden noch zwei andere Identitäten untersucht, welche aus den Thetareihen entspringen.
