On the fixing sets of finite groups

From MaRDI portal

Let \(\Gamma\) be a graph and let \(\mathrm{Aut}(\Gamma)\) denote its automorphism group. The fixing number of \(\Gamma\) is the minimum number of vertices that, when fixed, eliminate all non-trivial automorphisms from \(\mathrm{Aut}(\Gamma)\). The fixing set of a group \(G\), denoted by \(\mathrm{fix}(G)\), is the set of all fixing numbers of graphs whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to \(G\). For \(n \in \mathbb{N}\) with \(n \geq 2\), \textit{C. R. Gibbons} and \textit{J. D. Laison} [Electron. J. Comb. 16, No. 1, Research Paper R39, 13 p. (2009; Zbl 1204.05053)] conjectured that the fixing set of the symmetric group \(S_{n}\) on \(n\) symbols is \(\{1, 2,\ldots , n-1\}\).\N\NIn the paper under review, the authors disprove the above conjecture by proving the following result (Theorem 5.7): If \(n\geq 7\) is an integer, then \(n - 2 \not \in \mathrm{fix}(S_{n})\).\N\NFurthermore, they extend the study of fixing sets of symmetric groups by identifying previously unknown elements of these sets, utilizing Johnson graphs as a key tool. The investigation also addresses fixing sets of other groups, emphasizing that only a few of them have been fully determined. In particular, the authors establish the fixing sets of quasi-dihedral and quasi-abelian groups, leading to a characterization of the fixing set for every group isomorphic to a member of one of the six infinite families of 2-groups containing a cyclic subgroup of index \(2\).
