On the normalizer problem

From MaRDI portal

Let \(H\) be a subgroup of order \(|G|\) in the group \(U\) of 1-units in the group ring \(RG\) of a finite group \(G\) over an integral domain \(R\) of characteristic \(0\) in which no non-trivial divisor of \(|G|\) is invertible. The normalizer problem concerns \(\text{Out}_R(H)\), i.e., the factor of the group of automorphisms of \(H\) which arise from conjugation in \(U\) by the inner automorphisms of \(H\). For \(R=\mathbb{Z}\) and \(H=G\) this is \(2\)-group (Krempa); \(\text{Out}_\mathbb{Z}(G)\neq 1\) is possible (Hertweck). Closely related to \(\text{Out}_\mathbb{Z}(G)\) is the quotient \(N_U(G)/G\cdot Z(U)\) which is known to be trivial in many cases (Roggenkamp, Hertweck, Jackowski and Marciniak, Kimmerle). This paper not only discusses the connection with the isomorphism problem but also sketches a proof of \(\text{Out}_\mathbb{Z}(G)=1\) provided that \(G\) has no composition factor of order \(2\) and that the locally inner automorphisms of the non-Abelian composition factors are all inner. There are generalizations with respect to rings \(R\) as above. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0911.00010].
