On the odd order subgroups of solvable linear groups
Let \(G\) be a finite solvable group and let \(V\) be a finite, faithful, completely reducible \(G\)-module with \(\mathrm{char}(V) = p > 0\). \textit{O. Manz} and \textit{T. R. Wolf} [Representations of solvable groups. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (1993; Zbl 0928.20008), Theorem 3.5] showed that \N\begin{itemize}\N\item[(a)] \(|G| \leq |V|^\gamma/\lambda\); \N\item[(b)] if \(2 \nmid |G|\) or if \(3 \nmid |G|\), then \(|G| \leq |V|^{2}/\lambda\); \N\item[(c)] if \(2 \nmid |G|\) and \(p \not = 2\), then \(|G| \leq |V|^{3/2}/\lambda\) (where \(\lambda=24^{1/3} \approx 2.884\) and \(\gamma=(3\cdot \ln 48 +\ln 24)/(3\cdot \ln 9) \approx 2.244\)).\N\end{itemize}\NThe aim of the paper under review is to improve the bounds in (b) and in (c). The authors then use these results to bound the product of the orders of odd-order composition factors in a composition series of an arbitrary finite linear group \(G\). The statements of the theorems are too complicated to be reported here.
