On the square peg problem
The square peg problem, posed by Toeplitz in 1911, asks if any Jordan curve in the plane contains four points that define a square of positive area. Many partial solutions are known, often in cases where there are extra regularity conditions imposed on the Jordan curve in question. The general case, however, remains open.\N\NThe current paper gives a nice short exposition of some the classical approaches. The author then proves a new partial result to the conjecture for Jordan curves which are close (with respect to the maximum unsigned curvature of the Jordan curve in question) to a \(C^2\) Jordan curve, crediting previous work of Schirelman as inspiration for this approach.
