On time-periodic patterns

From MaRDI portal

The author studies the problem of pattern formation in a time periodic context. There is considered the two dimensional reaction-diffusion system NEWLINE\[NEWLINE{\partial u\over\partial t}=f(u)+ D{\partial^2 u \over\partial x^2}, \tag{1}NEWLINE\]NEWLINE with the boundary condition NEWLINE\[NEWLINE\partial u(t,0)/ \partial x=\partial u(t,1)/ \partial x=0,\tag{2}NEWLINE\]NEWLINE where \(D\) is a diagonal matrix, \(D=\text{diag}(d_1,d_2)\) \((d_1,d_2\) positive entries), \(f\in C^\ell(\mathbb{R}^2, \mathbb{R}^2)\), and \(\ell>0\). The solutions of (1) (2) are sought for in the function space \({\mathcal U}:=\{u\in C^2(R_+ \times[0,1], \mathbb{R}^2)\), \(u_x'(t,0)= u_x'(x,1) =)\), \(t\geq 0\}\). It is assumed that the kinetic system corresponding to (1) NEWLINE\[NEWLINEu'=f(u) \tag{3}NEWLINE\]NEWLINE has a non-constant periodic solution \(p:\mathbb{R}_+ \to\mathbb{R}^2\), with period \(T>0\) and this solution is orbitally asymptotically stable.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEIn this paper the author gives some conditions in which the problem (1) (2) has a solution of the form \(p(t+s_\ell)+ s_2y^{11}(t) \cos(\pi x/1)+s_2 \varphi(s_1,s_2 \cdot t,x)\) in which \(\varphi\in C^\ell(V\times \mathbb{R}_+\times [0,1],\mathbb{R}^2)\), \(V\) is a neighbourhood of \((0,0)\in \mathbb{R}^2\), \(s_1,s_2\in V\), \(y^{11}(t)\) is a periodic solution of a certain differential system.
