On variants of Chowla's conjecture

From MaRDI portal

The paper under review is in direction of the Chowla's famous and challenging conjecture on the averages of the products of the values of the Liouville function \(\lambda\) over shifted integers. Let \(P\) denote a subset of primes, and associated to \(P\), define the completely multiplicative function \(\lambda_P\) by \(\lambda_P(p)=-1\) if \(p\in P\), and \(\lambda_P(p)=+1\) otherwise. The author shows if \(H:=\{h_1,\dots, h_d\}\) is a fixed set of positive integers, then for any prime \(p\) there exists constants \(\eta_p^H\) such that\N\[\N\kappa_P^H:=\lim_{x\to\infty}\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\leq x}\lambda_P(n+h_1)\cdots\lambda_P(n+h_d)=\prod_{p\in P}(1-2\eta_p^H).\N\]\NAlso, the author shows that if there exists non-empty \(H\) such that \(|\kappa_P^H|=1\), then \(P\) is empty. More concretely, if \(\lambda_P:\mathbb{N}\to\{\pm 1\}\) is a non-constant completely multiplicative function, then for any \(H=\{h_1,\dots, h_d\}\),\N\[\N\liminf_{x\to\infty}\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\leq x}\lambda_P(n+h_1)\cdots\lambda_P(n+h_d)<1,\N\]\Nand\N\[\N\liminf_{x\to\infty}\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\leq x}\lambda_P(n+h_1)\cdots\lambda_P(n+h_d)>-1.\N\]\NAlthough, parts of the above results are known in previous works, the point about the present paper is its elementary combinatorial methods.
