Open electromagnetic waveguides
This monograph is devoted to the simulation and analysis of physical devices which are capable to guide electromagnetic waves along a longitudinal axis of symmetry and having, in contrast to closed waveguides, an unbounded cross section, which leads to the radiation of waves. Open waveguides have a wide range of applications from optical to radio frequencies, and the simulation has to take into account the close interaction between guided wave propagation and radiation.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe aim of the book is to present a unified modal approach for dealing with these two aspects of wave propagation in solving real technical problems. The method is based on the investigation of the eigenmodes of the Helmholtz equation in unbounded regions and is developed throughout the book starting from simple slab waveguides to more complicated structures where the Helmholtz equation cannot be solved by separation of variables. It should be mentioned that the proposed approach is of purely engineering level. Although the mathematics behind is rather interesting and many results are available, the authors do not mention them.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe monograph can be considered as formed of two parts. The introductory part contains a short overwiew of the practical applications of open waveguides and a review of classical electromagnetic theory. As a first practical example, planar dielectric waveguides are studied in great detail. This part could be used in any electrical engineering curriculum. The second part introduces several techniques to deal with discontinuities and bends in open waveguides. Then methods are developed for computing the spectrum of waveguides with nonseparable cross section. The concluding chapter contains some numerical examples to illustrate the application of these modal techniques to the solution of electromagnetic problems in the presence of open waveguides.NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe book can be recommended to students and practicing engineers dealing with the simulation of open waveguide structures used as planar antennas, millimetric circuits, or in integrated optics.
