Operating systems. Foundations and concepts
Operating systems are that part of the software of a computer system which makes available the computer's ressources (its hard- and software) for its users. Files and processes are typical concepts of operating systems. The book describes all essential aspects of a modern operating system. To my pleasure the author does not stay on an abstract description layer, but always projects his ideas onto real operating systems. Especially UNIX and MicroSoft's WindowsNT are used. The comparison of these two systems using practical concepts is very instructive and gives looks inside both of them. Besides classical themes like Files, Processes, Input/Output and Memory-Management, Network Services and Graphical User Interfaces are treated too. All themes are extensively presented and supported by graphical representations and algorithms in a pseudocode formulation, based on the Modula language. Readers can control the success of their reading using exercises to which solutions are given in an appendix. The book is carefully designed. A reference list for further readings, a list of graphical representations and an index are helpful to work with this book. I can recommend it to students of computer science or engineering sciences to support courses on operating system concepts.
