Optimal Triangular Mesh Generation by Coordinate Transformation

From MaRDI portal

The problem of interpolating a function with piecewise linear patches over a domain to within a given error tolerance is considered. A triangular mesh that achieves this error tolerance with the fewest triangles is defined to be optimally efficient. At first there is given the linear transformation that maps a regular mesh into an optimal mesh for the interpolation of a quadratic function. The condition for optimal mesh generation is based on a result in differential geometry characterizing a so called flat space. The transformations can be computed as the solution to a system of ordinary differential equations posed as an initial value problem. The optimality results are demonstrated for some numerical examples.
