Optimal regularity for the fully nonlinear thin obstacle problem

From MaRDI portal

In this very interesting paper, the authors focus on the optimal regularity and homogeneity of blow-ups at regular points for solutions to the Signorini (also known as the thin obstacle) problem for fully nonlinear operators.\N\NMore precisely, one focuses on a convex, fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic operator with \(F(0)=0\). The problem at hand is\N\[\N\begin{cases} F(D^2u)=0 \text{ in } B_1\setminus\{x_n=0, u=0\},\\\NF(D^2u)\le 0 \text{ in } B_1,\\\Nu \ge 0 \text{ on } B_1\cap\{x_n=0\}. \end{cases}\N\]\NFollowing [\textit{X. Ros-Oton} and \textit{J. Serra}, Adv. Math. 316, 710--747 (2017; Zbl 1371.35365)], it is known that given any \(x_0\in \partial\{u=0\}\cap B_{1/2}\cap\{x_n=0\}\) with \(|\nabla u(x_0)|=0\), there exists \(\varepsilon_0>0\) such that \(x_0\) is either a \textit{regular} point, or a \textit{degenerate} point. Being regular means\N\[\Ncr^{2-\varepsilon_0}\le\sup_{B_r(x_0)}u\le Cr^{1+\varepsilon_0},\N\]\Nwith \(c>0\) and all \(r\in (0,1/4)\), while being degenerate means\N\[\N0\le \sup_{B_r(x_0)}u\le C_{\varepsilon}r^{2-\varepsilon},\N\]\Nfor all \(\varepsilon>0\) and \(r\in (0,1/4)\).\N\NIn this paper, the authors obtain the optimal regularity for solutions to the problem above, that is, they show the existence of an optimal exponent \(\alpha_F\) such that \(u\) is \(C^{1,\alpha_F}\) on either side of the obstacle. Key ingredients of the proof are the uniqueness of blow-ups at regular points, which leads to their homogeneity, along with an expansion of the solution there. The authors also prove that if the operator is rotationally invariant, then \(\alpha_F\ge \frac{1}{2}\), and the solution is always \(C^{1,1/2}\).
