Overcoming Corner Singularities Using Multigrid Methods

From MaRDI portal

The paper is based on the well-known idea of enriching the space of ansatz-functions for constant coefficient linear equations -- here Poisson's equation -- with singular functions, which are solutions of the homogeneous problem -- presumed to be known. This way, provided the right hand side is smooth, the singular part can be peeled off, and the remaining regular part can be approximated by high-order finite elements. It is proposed to solve the discrete equations by a multigrid method, which at the same time also determines the ``stress-intensity factors -- the coefficients of the singular components. The multigrid convergence rate is estimated theoretically. No numerical experiments or examples are provided.
