The paper has two distinct parts. In the first one, the authors analyze the mortar element method considering the case of overlapping subdomains. They use nonmatching grids, prove an optimal error bound and estimate the condition numbers of some overlapping Schwarz preconditioned systems. It turns out that the error bound is independent of the size of the overlap and the ratio of the mesh parameters. In the second part, they introduce and analyze three additive Schwarz preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithms. The error bound is again independent of the size of the overlap but the condition number depends on that. Some numerical examples are carried out in order to support the theory. They refer to variational formulation of homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the two-dimensional Poisson equation.
