PROJECTIONS ON OPERATOR DUALS

From MaRDI portal

Let \(L(E, F)\) be the space of bounded linear operators from \(E\) into \(F\), where \(E\), \(F\) are two separated locally convex spaces and \(K(E,F)\) its subspace of quasi compact operators. The author establishes the following two main results: 1) If \(T_n\), \(T\in K_b(E,F)\), \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), such that \(T_n\to T\), then \(\Phi(T_n)\to \Phi(T)\), for any \(\Phi\in L_b(E, F)^*\), where \(w'\) is the dual weak operator topology on \(L(X,Y)\) defined by \textit{N. J. Kalton} [Math. Ann. 208, 267-278 (1974; Zbl 0273.47023)] and \(L_b(E, F)\), \(K_b(E, F)\) are the above operator spaces endowed with the topology of uniform convergence on bounded sets. 2) If any \(T\in L_b(E,F)\) is the \(w'\)-limit of a bounded sequence \((T_n)\subset K_b(E, F)\), then the linear operator \(p: L_b(E, F)^*\to L_b(E, F)'\), defined by \(p\Phi(T)= \lim_{n\to\infty} \Phi(T_n)\), \(\Phi\in L_b(E, F)^*\), maps into \(L_b(E,F)^*\) and is a closed graph projection with kernel \(K_b(E, F)^\perp\). In particular, \(K_b(E,F)^*\) and \(K_b(E,F)^\perp\) are isomorphic to a closed subspace of the dual space \(L_b(E,F)^*\) endowed with strong topology. This second result represents a consistent generalization of a celebrated result of \textit{J. Johnson} [J. Funct. Anal. 32, 304-311 (1979; Zbl 0412.47024)]. Also, the author discusses different connections with the results of \textit{K. John} [Note Mat. 12, 69-75 (1992; Zbl 0802.46015) and Czech. Math. J. 45, No. 2, 235-240 (1995; Zbl 0869.46011)]. Some interesting remarks and examples are given.
