Abstract: We give an algebraic geometric compactification of certain moduli spaces of semistable E-pairs in the sense of Yokogawa. In particular, we obtain a compactification of the moduli spaces of semistable Higgs pairs on a curve which were constructed by N. Hitchin.

Let \((X,{\mathcal O}_X(1))\) be a smooth complex projective variety, \(L\) a line bundle on \(X\) and \(P\) a numerical polynomial. The object of this paper is to construct a compactification for the moduli space of pairs \((E,\varphi)\), where \(E\) is a vector bundle on \(X\) with Hilbert polynomial \(P_E=P\) and \(\varphi:E\to E\otimes L\) is a homomorphism. These moduli spaces were constructed by \textit{N. J. Hitchin} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 55, 59-126 (1987; Zbl 0634.53045)] and \textit{N. Nitsure} [ibid. 62, No. 2, 275-300 (1991; Zbl 0733.14005)] when \(X\) is a curve, and by \textit{K. Yokogawa} [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 31, No. 1, 311-327 (1991; Zbl 0739.14007)] in general. All these spaces are non-complete. The author introduces a concept of Hitchin pair of type \((L,P)\), namely a triple \(({\mathcal E},\varepsilon,\varphi)\), where \({\mathcal E}\) is a torsion-free coherent sheaf on \(X\) with Hilbert polynomial \(P_{\mathcal E}= P\), \(\varepsilon\in \mathbb{C}\) and \(\varphi:{\mathcal E}\to{\mathcal E}\otimes L\) is a homomorphism. Two such triple \(({\mathcal E}_1, \varepsilon_1, \varphi_1)\), \(({\mathcal E}_2, \varepsilon_2, \varphi_2)\) are equivalent if there exists an isomorphism \(\psi:{\mathcal E}_1\to{\mathcal E}_2\) and \(z\in \mathbb{C}^*\) such that \(\varphi_2\circ \psi= (\psi\otimes (z.\text{id}_L))\circ \varphi_1\) and \(\varepsilon_2= z\varepsilon_1\). Moreover \(({\mathcal E}, \varepsilon, \varphi)\) is defined to be semistable if (1) for any non-zero \(\varphi\)-invariant subsheaf \({\mathcal F}\) of \({\mathcal E}\) we have \((P_{_\mathcal F}/ \text{rk }{\mathcal F})\leq (P_{\mathcal E}/\text{rk }{\mathcal E})\), and (2) either \(\varepsilon\neq 0\) or \(\varphi\) is not nilpotent. The compactified moduli space is then constructed using the standard techniques of geometric invariant theory. It may be noted that results in this direction have been obtained by \textit{C. T. Simpson} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 79, 47-129 (1994; Zbl 0891.14005)] in a general framework, and by \textit{T. Hausel} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 503, 169-192 (1998; Zbl 0930.14016)] in the special case where \(X\) is a curve and the determinant of \(E\) is fixed. It is not clear that Simpson's results can be specialized to those of the author, but in any case the author's treatment is clearer and more direct.
