Permutation dimensions of prime cyclic groups
Let \(G\) be a finite group and let \(k\) be a field of characteristic \(p>0\). The paper introduces the \(p\)-permutation dimension of \(G\) over \(k\). This notion is motivated by the fact that every \(kG\)-module admits a finite \(p\)-permutation resolution by \textit{P. Balmer} and \textit{M. Gallauer} [Duke Math. J. 172, No. 2, 201--229 (2023; Zbl 1522.20046)]. The main result is an explicit computation of this invariant for prime cyclic groups.\N\NFor a finitely generated \(kG\)-module \(M\), the \(p\)-permutation dimension \(\mathsf{ppdim}(M)\) is defined as the minimal length of an exact resolution of \(M\) by \(p\)-permutation modules. The corresponding group invariant \(\mathsf{ppdim}_k(G)\) is the supremum of \(\mathsf{ppdim}(M)\) over all finitely generated \(kG\)-modules \(M\).\N\NThe main part of the paper treats the case \(G=C_p\). Using the description \(kC_p\cong k[T]/(T^p)\) and the indecomposable modules \(M_i\) of dimensions \(i=1,\dots,p\), the author introduces a combinatorial invariant \(\mathrm{dist}_p(M)\) and proves that \(\mathsf{ppdim}(M)=\mathrm{dist}_p(M)\) for every \(kC_p\)-module \(M\). As a consequence, he obtains \(\mathsf{ppdim}_k(C_p)=p-2\).
