Planar vector fields in the kernel of a 1-form

From MaRDI portal

In the plane with volume form \(\omega\) and a fixed 1-form \(a\), the equation \(X_a \lrcorner \omega = a\) (describing the contraction of a vector field with respect to a differential form) defines a unique vector field \(X_a\). The kernel of 1-form \(a\) is defined has \(\ker(a) = \{X \in \mathcal{X}(\mathbb{R}^2, a(X) = 0\} \). The author is concerned with classifying vector fields that belong to the kernel of a 1-form. He argues that, with some general assumptions, this problem can be reduced to a geometric question of classifying the germs of smooth curves in the plane, at least up to diffeomorphisms that preserve a given foliation.\N\NAn equivalence relation is described that preserves the kernel of the 1-forms of interest; this relation induces a partition of vector fields belonging to \(\ker(a)\) into equivalence classes, with all members of the class sharing the same orbit structure. Both cases (where the 1-form is closed or not closed) are considered.\N\NThe author's intention is to produce a fairly complete list of local models for such vector fields and construct their universal unfoldings. This would enable study of the local bifurcations of planar vector fields of interest, including integrable planar vector fields. Also presented are local models for singularities of vector fields in the kernel of the 1-form in the plane.
